Draco lizards are amazing animals known as flying dragons.

They belong to a group of lizards called agamids. These creatures live mostly in trees within tropical rainforests. You can find them in Southeast Asia and Southern India. They live in places like teak plantations and shrub jungles. They spend almost all their time high above the forest floor.

These lizards eat small insects like ants and termites.

To move through the trees, they use a special way of gliding. They have skin membranes called patagia. These membranes act like wings to help them catch lift. The wings are held open by extra-long ribs in their chest.

To start, the lizard jumps and falls headfirst. It keeps its body parallel to the ground. Muscles called the iliocostalis and intercostal muscles control the wings. The lizard uses its front limbs to steer while it glides. It lands on its feet to stay safe.

People have studied these lizards for a very long time. Carl Linnaeus first described the Draco genus in 1758. He named the first species Draco volans. The name Draco comes from the Latin word for dragons in myths. Some scientists once doubted if they could really glide. They were not sure if the wing membranes were important. However, research in the late 1950s proved they do glide. This helped everyone understand how these lizards travel.

There are 41 different species of Draco lizards recognized today. They come in many different sizes and weights. For example, some adults are quite small while others are larger. Females are usually bigger than the males.

Males use bright parts under their chin called dewlaps to show off. They hold these dewlaps toward the sun to be seen. They also use their wings to defend their homes. Most males guard just one or a few trees. They are very territorial about their space.

These lizards are masters of hiding in the forest. Their skin color matches the falling leaves and tree bark. This helps them stay hidden from hungry birds. This type of hiding is called camouflage. Their gliding is a lot like how a paper airplane moves. They do not have powered flight like a bird. Instead, they use gravity and air to travel between trees. This allows them to find food and stay safe in the canopy.
