These buses are very useful for moving many people at once. Most people use them for daily travel to work or school. Some models have an open top for tourists to see the sights. Other versions are coaches built for long trips between cities. You can find them in many big cities all over the world.

How these buses work has changed over many years. Early models had a separate cab just for the driver. Passengers entered through an open platform at the very back. A conductor would walk around to collect the money for fares. Today, most buses have a main door at the front. The driver now takes the fares from the passengers. This change means fewer workers are needed on the bus. However, it can make boarding the bus a bit slower.

History shows us how these buses first began. The earliest horse-drawn double-decker buses appeared in Paris in 1853. Later, engines were added to make them motorized in the 1900s. In England, Adams & Co. introduced horse-drawn versions in 1847. A man named John Greenwood improved them in 1852. In London, the red AEC Routemaster became a very famous bus. It served the city for nearly fifty years after 1956.

There are many interesting facts about bus sizes and types. In the United Kingdom, most buses are between 9.5 and 11.1 metres long. Some larger three-axle models can reach 12 metres. In London, the first all-electric double-deckers arrived in October 2015. These were made by a Chinese company called BYD. In the Republic of Ireland, Dublin Bus has a huge fleet. They have about 1,000 double-decker buses in their collection.

Double-deckers are helpful because they do not take up much road space. They can carry many people while staying short in length. This makes them safer to drive through narrow city streets. They can also turn tight corners much more easily than long buses. Many cities like Hong Kong and Singapore use them often. Even in Berlin, they have a very large fleet of these buses. They help keep cities moving every single day.
