A tram is a type of urban rail transit used in cities.

In North America, people often call these vehicles streetcars or trolleys. Trams are a type of light rail, which is a broad category of transport. However, trams are different from main line trains in a few ways. They usually share the street with other vehicles like cars and buses. They also have a lower capacity, meaning they carry fewer people at once.

Some trams even run on segments of track that are kept separate from traffic.

Most modern trams use electrical power to move along the tracks. This electricity usually comes from an overhead line above the street. A device called a pantograph slides along this wire to collect power.

Older systems might use a different tool called a trolley pole or a bow collector. In some special cases, a contact shoe uses a third rail for power. Some trams even use two different power systems at once. They might use electricity on city streets and diesel engines in rural areas.

The history of trams began in the early nineteenth century. Before electric motors, people used animal power to move these cars. In 1804, the British Parliament passed the Mumbles Railway Act in Wales. This led to the Swansea and Mumbles Railway, which was the world's first passenger tram service.

Using horses was a very hard job for the animals. Horses needed food, grooming, and rest every single day. They also produced a huge amount of manure that had to be cleaned up. Because of these costs, electric trams began to replace animal power in the late 1800s.

Different parts of the world developed their own tram systems. The first permanent tram line in continental Europe opened in Paris in 1855.

In South America, the first tram opened in Santiago, Chile, in 1858. Australia saw its first trams in Sydney during the year 1860. Africa's first service started in Alexandria on January 8, 1863. The first trams in Asia arrived in Batavia in 1869. These dates show how the idea of the tram spread across the entire globe.

Moving on rails is much easier than moving on a regular road. Trams use metal wheels that run on steel rails. This setup creates low rolling resistance, which is a science term for how easily things roll.

Because there is less friction, the tram can haul a greater load with less effort. This is similar to how a sled slides easily over smooth ice. This simple physics helped trams become a very popular way to travel. Even though buses became popular later, trams have seen a resurgence since the 1980s.
