Trolleybus

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A trolleybus is a special kind of electric bus. It is a great way to move people around cities. Unlike a regular bus, it does not use a battery for power. Instead, it gets its energy from wires hanging above the road.

These wires are usually held up by posts along the street. A trolleybus is different from a tram or a streetcar. Trams run on metal tracks and use the tracks to complete an electrical circuit. A trolleybus has rubber tires and needs two wires to work.

To make the bus move, it must complete a circuit. The bus uses two long poles called trolley poles.

These poles are spring-loaded or use air to stay pushed up against the wires. One pole connects to one wire, and the other pole connects to the second wire. This setup allows the electricity to flow through the bus. Most older systems use 600-volt direct current for this power. Newer systems often use 750-volts to run the motors.

People have been testing these vehicles for a long time. The very first one was called the "Elektromote." Dr. Ernst Werner Siemens showed it in a suburb of Berlin on April 29, 1882.

Later, Max Schiemann helped create the standard way poles connect to wires. He opened a system in Germany in 1901. This system used two parallel wires and rigid poles. His design is very similar to what we see on roads today.

Trolleybuses are used in many parts of the world. There are about 300 systems working in 43 different countries.

The oldest system still running is in Shanghai, China. It started in 1914 and is still going strong. In terms of length, Kyiv has the largest system in the world. The longest single line is route number 52 in Crimea.

Some cities, like Beijing, have very large fleets with over 1,250 buses.

Using a trolleybus has many benefits for a city. They are often quieter than trams because they have rubber tires. These tires also help the bus climb steep hills better than metal wheels on tracks.

If a car is blocking the road, a trolleybus can steer around it. This is something a tram cannot do easily. However, they do need wide lanes so they do not drift too far. If they move too far, the poles might lose contact with the wires.
