The Dhammapada is a very famous book. It holds sayings from the Buddha. These sayings are written as short poems called verses.

Many people read these words today. They are popular with monks and regular people too. The book is part of the Pali Canon. This is a large collection of Buddhist texts.

The name Dhammapada has a deep meaning. The word "dhamma" can mean truth or righteousness. The word "pada" can mean a path or a verse. Because of this, people use many titles for the book. Some call it "The Path of Righteousness." Others call it "The Buddha's Path of Virtue."

One scholar named Buddhaghosa wrote stories about the verses. He said each saying came from a real moment. These moments happened in the life of the Buddha. The book has 423 verses in 26 chapters. Many chapters look at opposites. They show the difference between joy and suffering. They also show the difference between truth and lies. One verse says that our minds lead us. If we are kind, happiness follows us like a shadow.
