De is a very important idea in Chinese thought.

德-oracle

It has many meanings depending on the belief system. In Taoism, it can mean inner power or integrity. In Confucianism, it often means moral character or virtue.

Some people also see it as a special quality or merit. Because it has so many meanings, it is hard to translate into English. One scholar, Arthur Waley, thought "power" was a better word than "virtue." He used the idea of a bank to explain it. He said de is like a stock of credit. You build this stock through good actions and rituals.

The word is also linked to planting seeds. This suggests it is a power that grows inside something. Some thinkers say it is like an electric charge. This charge can move from one person to another. The written character for de has changed over a long time. Early versions used signs for "footstep" and "straight." Later versions added a part that means "heart" or "mind." This shows how the word connects to a person's inner self.
