Description

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Description helps a reader see things clearly. It can show a place or an object. It can even show a person or a group. Writers use it to send a mental image to you. This helps a story come to life.

Description is one of four ways to communicate. These ways are called rhetorical modes. Other modes include narration and exposition. In fiction, writers use many tools. They use dialogue and action to tell a story. They also use summary and transition.

Good description is more than just a list of facts. A writer must choose and arrange words with care. This makes the scene feel real. Sometimes, a writer tries too hard. They might use too many fancy words. This is called purple prose. A poet named Horace first used a similar term. He called it a purple patch. This meant a part that was too ornate. Today, people use the term purple prose for writing that is too lavish. It can feel out of place in a story. Description is a very important tool for any writer.
