Description

Description is a special way to communicate. It helps you see a place or an object in your mind. You can also use it to picture a person or a group. This tool makes things feel vivid and real to a reader. It is one of four main ways to talk or write. These ways are called rhetorical modes. Other modes include exposition, argumentation, and narration.

In stories, description has a very important job. It helps send a mental image of a story to you. Authors use it to show the small details of a scene. Peter Selgin says writers use many different methods. These include action, dialogue, thoughts, and scenes. Description works with these other tools to tell a tale. It is one of the most famous ways to write fiction.

Good description is not just a long list of facts. Kirk Polking wrote about this in Writing from A to Z. A writer must choose words with great care. They must also arrange those words in a special way. This helps them create a specific effect for the reader. The goal is to bring something to life. It makes the world of the story feel much bigger.

Sometimes, a writer might try too hard to be fancy. This can lead to something called purple prose. A writer might use too many elaborate figures of speech. This is also known as an overwrought style. Long ago, a Roman poet named Horace used a different term. He called an extra passage a purple patch. He wrote this in his book Ars Poetica around 20 BC.

In the past, Horace used the term to mean something irrelevant. He used the Latin words purpureus pannus for it. Today, people use purple prose to mean writing that is too lavish. It can feel out of place in a story. Description is still a major part of writing today. Even philosophers like Bertrand Russell have studied it. They have asked many deep questions about how it works.
