Writing style

arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Writing style is the special way a person expresses their thoughts through language. It is not just about following basic rules like spelling or grammar. Those rules are often called mechanics or essentials. Style is different because it focuses on how a writer does something. It includes the choice of words and how sentences are built. A person's style might be unique to them. It can also belong to a certain time or a whole nation.

There are three main parts to how style works. First is diction, which is the specific choice of words. Writers might use a dictionary to find the best words. They also try to avoid using the same words too often. Second is sentence structure. This is how a writer puts words together to create a tone. Third is paragraph structure. A paragraph might hold one single idea. It can also be a step in a larger argument.

Many famous writers have used different styles throughout history. William Shakespeare wrote a famous part of Hamlet in 1599. He used many words to describe the world and the air. Charles Dickens wrote A Tale of Two Cities in 1859. He used many opposites, like light and darkness, to show his points. In 1945, Dylan Thomas wrote about his memories of Christmas. Ray Bradbury wrote about colorful windows in 1955. Martin Luther King Jr. wrote a famous letter from a jail in 1963.

Learning about style involves looking at many different things. Some people study how words are used in large groups of text. This is called corpus linguistics. Others look at how language changes over time. Some people study how different groups of people use English. This can include code-meshing, which is mixing different language varieties together. This can help a writer show who they are. It is a way to express a social identity.

Style is also closely linked to a writer's voice. A voice is the special way a writer sounds to a reader. It can feel like a person is speaking to you. This voice can be a personality or a specific tone. Some writers use a persona, which is an assumed voice. This is different from their own personal voice. Writers use sentence patterns to make their voice unique. This helps them tell a story in a way only they can.
