Most of it came from one large place. This was Ivittuut on the coast of Greenland. Mining there ended in 1987.\n\nPeople first found this stone from local Inuit people. They used it to wash animal hides. A man named Peter Christian Abildgaard described it in 1798.

He called it cryolite. This name comes from Greek words. It means \"ice stone." The name fits because it melts easily when heated.\n\nCryolite helps us make aluminum metal. To make aluminum, we must melt a rock called bauxite. This is very hard to do. Bauxite needs a lot of heat to melt. Cryolite acts as a flux. A flux is a substance that helps melt other things. It lowers the heat needed for the bauxite. This makes the work much cheaper and easier.\n\nBecause natural cryolite is so rare, we now make a fake version. We make it from a common mineral called fluorite. We also use cryolite for other jobs. It can be a dye. It can also help make fireworks a bright yellow color.
