Zeolites are special minerals. They are made of silicon, aluminium, and oxygen.

These minerals have a very neat structure. They form a 3D network of tiny parts. This network creates many small holes or gaps. We call these tiny holes pores.

Because they have pores, zeolites can act like a molecular sieve. A sieve helps sort things by size. In a zeolite, only small molecules can fit into the pores. This helps us separate different things.

Zeolites can also do ion exchange. This means they can swap one tiny part for another. This helps clean water. They can take out minerals that make water hard. This is why they are in laundry soap.

Some zeolites are found in nature. Others are made in labs. Scientists can make synthetic zeolites to be very uniform. This means they are all the same. They can even make shapes that do not exist in nature.
