This city has been a center for trade and politics for a very long time. In ancient times, the site was home to the Roman and Dacian city called Pelendava. Later, a powerful family called the Craiovești ruled the area. They were so influential that they could even choose leaders for the country.

These leaders had the right to make their own coins. The name Craiova might come from an old word for "king" or a word for "border." The city has faced many hard times throughout its history. It survived an earthquake in 1790 and a fire during a Turkish assault in 1802.

As time passed, Craiova became a very important place for business. In the early 1800s, people traded many things like wheat, furs, and leather. By 1832, the city had 595 shops to serve its people. Many of these buildings were made of brick.

The city also became a leader in new technology. On October 26, 1896, Craiova became the first city in Romania to use electric power. This power came from internal combustion engines. It helped light up 365 streetlights across a 30 km network.

In the 1900s, the city grew even more with many different industries. By 1900, it held over 43% of the industrial units in the Oltenia region. There were hundreds of companies, including many large ones.

In the 1960s, the city became a major center for making cars and engines. It also grew to include aerospace and chemical manufacturing. During this time, many new housing estates were built for people to live in.

These neighborhoods helped the city expand as more people arrived to work in the factories.

Today, Craiova is a large urban center with many different parts to explore. As of 2021, about 234,140 people live within the city limits.
