Computer-mediated communication

technology Maturity 5-7 Next article →

People use many tools to share ideas today. This is called computer-mediated communication, or CMC for short. It happens when two or more electronic devices help people talk.

This type of talking is very important for our world. It helps people work together from far away. It even changes how we use grammar and language. Scientists study how digital spaces change the way we speak.

CMC can happen through email or social media. It also includes things like instant messaging and chat rooms. Even text messaging is a form of CMC.

There are two main ways this communication works. The first way is called synchronous communication. This means the talking happens in real-time. All people are talking at the same time. Video chats and audio calls are good examples.

The second way is called asynchronous communication. This means the people are not talking in unison. The person who sends a message does not get a reply right away. Most digital tools are asynchronous. Emails and text messages are common examples of this. These messages stay saved for a long time.

Researchers look at how CMC affects our feelings and friendships. Some people study how we form impressions of others online. Others look at how we use special symbols like emoticons.

People might feel less shy because they can stay private. This can help people form new relationships very quickly. However, it can also be hard to understand a person's tone. Without seeing a face, a message might be misunderstood.

Many experts have shared ideas about how this works. A writer named Nicholas Jankowski wrote a book called The Contours of Multimedia. He said that software acts like a third party. It sits in the middle between the sender and the receiver. Another researcher named Walther shared a model in 1996. His hyperpersonal communication model says CMC can lead to better first impressions. Ramirez and Zhang also studied this in 2007. They found that CMC can create closeness between two people. These studies help us understand our digital lives better.

CMC connects to many parts of your daily life. It helps students learn new languages by practicing online. For example, some teachers use email or discussion boards. This helps bridge the gap between speaking and writing. It also helps people work on big projects together. People can collaborate even if they live in different countries.

Even if someone is shy, they can participate easily. This makes communication more inclusive for everyone. Digital tools are changing very fast every single day.
