Computer-mediated communication

technology Maturity 5-7 Next article →

People use machines to talk to each other. This is called computer-mediated communication. It happens when two or more electronic devices help us share ideas.

There are two main ways this works. The first way is synchronous. This means people talk in real-time. They are all talking at the same time. Video chats and audio calls are examples. The second way is asynchronous. This means the people are not talking at once. The person who sends a message does not get a reply right away. Emails and text messages are examples of this.

Computers can change how we act. People might share more personal thoughts online. They might feel less shy because they can stay private. We also use special tools like emojis. These are small pictures that show feelings.

These tools help us show what we mean. However, it can be hard to understand someone's tone. Without seeing a face, a message might be read the wrong way. Computers help us work together even when we are far apart.
