You can use text, sound, or video. Most chat is real-time. This means there is no big delay. It feels like a real talk. People call this synchronous conferencing. That just means everyone is there at once.

You can chat one-on-one with a friend. You can also join a chat room. A chat room lets many people talk in one group. Some chat rooms use graphics. You can use an avatar. An avatar is a digital picture of you. You can move around in a virtual world. Chat helps people learn, too. Students can talk to teachers from far away. They can also talk to experts. This helps everyone learn together. The first chat system was made in 1971. It was used by the U.S. government. Later, systems like Talkomatic let people chat in public.
