Anthropology is the scientific study of all things related to humans. It is a very broad field that connects biology and sociology. Scientists in this field look at human behavior and human biology. They also study different cultures, societies, and the way people use language. This study covers people living right now and people from the distant past. It even includes the study of very old, archaic humans.

There are several different ways to practice anthropology. Social anthropology looks at patterns in how people behave. Cultural anthropology focuses on the meanings behind traditions, values, and norms. Many people today call this sociocultural anthropology. Linguistic anthropology explores how language changes our social lives. Biological anthropology studies the evolution of humans and our close primate relatives.

Archaeology is often called the "anthropology of the past." These researchers study human activity by looking at physical remains. In North America and Asia, archaeology is usually seen as a branch of anthropology. However, in Europe, it is often treated as its own separate subject. This field helps us piece together how people lived long ago. It works alongside other sciences to tell the story of humanity.

The word anthropology comes from two Greek words. The word "anthropos" means human, and "logos" means study. The term began to be used in English by the early 18th century. In the 1800s, many new groups formed to study these topics. For example, the Société d'Anthropologie de Paris met for the first time in 1859. This was the same year Paul Broca became a leader in the field.

Anthropology has grown very large over the last hundred years. By 1898, there were 48 schools in 13 countries teaching it. Today, there are thousands of anthropology departments in universities around the world. The field even uses practical skills to solve real problems. For instance, forensic archaeologists can help reconstruct scenes involving buried victims. It is a global science that helps us understand our place in nature.
