This technology lets people send messages right away. This is called real-time communication. It is different from email because you get an answer almost immediately. You can talk to one person in a private chat. You can also join a chat room to talk to a group. Many people use a contact list to find their friends. This list is sometimes called a buddy list or a friend list.

How these messages move depends on the system being used. Some systems use a peer-to-peer model. This means messages go directly from one person to another. Other systems use a client-server model. In this way, all messages must first connect to a central server.

Most big companies use this server model to manage their apps. Modern apps do much more than just send text. You can send emojis, photos, and videos. You can even use a microphone for voice calls or a webcam for video chat. Some apps even let you share your location or send money.

People have been finding ways to chat online for a long time. The very first versions appeared in the mid-1960s. These were used on large computer systems like CTSS and Multics. In 1973, a program called Talkomatic let five people chat at once.

Later, the IRC protocol began in 1989 and became a very popular standard. In the 1990s, new services like ICQ and AOL Instant Messenger arrived. These made chatting much easier for regular people to use. In 2005, BlackBerry Messenger became a popular way to chat on mobile phones.

Today, instant messaging is a huge part of our lives.

Many different apps are popular depending on where you live. WhatsApp is the largest network with 1.3 billion monthly users. WeChat is another massive app with 980 million monthly users. Some apps are built for specific jobs. For example, Slack is used by work teams to share files. Skype is often used for video calls. Snapchat is a popular choice for sending image messages.

You can see how instant messaging connects to many things you already use. It is part of the social media you might see on your phone. Apps like Instagram and TikTok also have messaging parts built in. Even online games use chat so players can talk to each other. Some apps even let you play games like Tetris inside the chat window.
