SMS is a way to send short text messages between devices.

It is a part of most mobile phone and internet systems. These messages usually travel across cellular networks. The service allows people to send up to 160 characters at once. A character can be a letter, a number, or a symbol. This limit was chosen so messages would fit into existing systems.

Today, SMS works on many networks, including the new 5G ones.

Sending a message works by using paths that are already there. Engineers wanted to use the signaling paths that control phone calls. These paths are used to manage telephone traffic. When there is no signaling traffic, these resources are unused. SMS uses these empty spaces to move messages at a low cost. This way, the system does not need to build brand new paths. Messages can also travel over the internet using special gateways.

People worked together for many years to build this technology. In 1984, Friedhelm Hillebrand and Bernard Ghillebaert developed the SMS concept. They worked through a group called GSM. They wanted to make sure messages could be sent and acknowledged. In 1985, a proposal for SMS was made in Oslo, Norway. Later, a group led by Finn Trosby worked on the technical rules. The first real SMS message was sent on December 3, 1992. Neil Papworth sent the words "Merry Christmas" from a computer.

SMS grew very quickly around the whole world. By the end of 2010, it had about 3.5 billion active users. This was about 80% of all people with mobile phones. In 2002, people sent 366 billion messages globally. By 2010, that number rose to 6.1 trillion messages. The Philippines became known as the "texting capital of the world" in 2001. In the United States, adoption was slower at first. This was because many people had cheap voice calls instead.

We use SMS for many things in our daily lives. It is not just for chatting with friends. Businesses use it for mobile marketing to reach customers. It is also used for mobile banking and televoting. Many websites use it for two-factor authentication to keep accounts safe. Later, a newer version called MMS was made to send pictures. Now, newer apps like WhatsApp and WeChat are very popular. However, SMS remains a huge and important part of how we connect.
