A pager is a wireless device used to receive messages.

These tools can show text or even play voice messages. Some pagers are one-way, which means they only receive information. Other models are two-way, so they can also send replies or start new messages.

Pagers work as part of a larger system. This system includes fixed transmitters that send signals through the air. These signals travel to the mobile pagers carried by people. A system can be very small, like one in a restaurant. It can also be huge, covering an entire country with thousands of base stations.

To understand how it works, imagine a radio station sending a signal to a car. In a paging system, a transmitter sends out a specific signal. The pager listens for a signal that matches its own unique address.

When the pager catches the right signal, it alerts the user. This might happen through a beep, a buzz, or a vibration. One-way pagers do not send a signal back to say they got the message. This makes them different from mobile phones that talk back to towers. Two-way pagers use an internal transmitter to send a response back to a base station.

People have been using paging technology for a long time. Al Gross patented the first telephone pager system in 1949. He wanted to help doctors stay connected to their patients. In 1950, a service for doctors started in New York City. These doctors paid $12 each month to use the service.

Later, in 1960, John Francis Mitchell made a new kind of pager. He used parts from walkie-talkies and car radios to build it. By the 1980s, many professionals used these devices every day.

There are many interesting facts about how these devices changed over time. In 1962, the Bell System showed off the Bellboy pager at a fair. It was small enough to fit in a pocket, which was a big deal then. In the 1990s, pagers became very popular with the general public. They were often cheaper and more reliable than early mobile phones. However, as mobile phones and smartphones became common, the pager industry began to shrink. In the United States, the industry made $6.2 billion in 2003, but only $2.1 billion in 2008.

Even though smartphones are everywhere, pagers are still very useful today. They are often used by emergency services and public safety workers. This is because paging signals can be very strong and reliable.

During natural disasters, pagers might work even when cell phone networks fail. You might also see pagers used in restaurants to alert customers. When your food is ready, a small pager might vibrate or flash. This is a simple way to help people know it is time to eat.
