These gadgets are very helpful for people who love to read. One big advantage is that they are easy to carry around. An e-reader can hold thousands of books at once. Yet, it still weighs less than just one single printed book. They also have many extra features to help you read better.

Most e-readers use a special screen called electronic paper, or e-ink. This technology works differently than the LCD screens on a phone. Instead of shining light into your eyes, e-ink reflects light like real paper. This makes the screen very easy to read in bright sunlight. Because it does not need a bright backlight, the battery lasts a long time. A single charge can last for several weeks. However, these screens usually refresh slowly and often only show shades of gray.

People have dreamed of these machines for a long time. In 1930, Bob Brown wrote about a machine called "The Readies." He imagined a device that could scroll through huge novels very quickly. The very first e-reader was actually invented much later in 1972. It was created by George Yevick and Adnan Wally. That early version used a liquid-crystal display to prevent washout. Even though it was an important invention, it was not sold in stores right away.

Many famous companies helped make e-readers popular in the 2000s. Sony released the Librie in 2004, which was the first to use e-ink. Then, Amazon released the Kindle in 2007. The Kindle was so popular that it sold out in just five and a half hours! By the year 2010, global sales reached 12.8 million units. Many people bought Kindles or the Barnes & Noble Nook. In 2011, the market reached a high point with 23.2 million sales worldwide.

Today, you can read books in many different ways. You can use a dedicated e-reader, or you can use a tablet computer. Tablets like the iPad are multi-functional tools that can do many jobs. They use LCD screens and can run many different reading apps. Some e-readers are even built with an open Android system. This allows you to download books from many different places. Whether you use a special device or a tablet, digital reading is everywhere.
