These devices are very light to carry. One e-reader can hold thousands of books at once. This is much easier than carrying many heavy paper books.

Many e-readers use e-ink. This is a type of electronic paper. It reflects light just like real paper. This makes reading easy even in bright sunlight. It also helps the battery last for many weeks.

Some screens only show black and white. However, new color e-readers are now in stores. You can also change the size of the words. This helps people who find small text hard to read. Some devices even let you look up words quickly.

In the past, people could not use them on planes. This changed in 2013. Now, you can use them if you turn on Airplane Mode. You can buy books through the device or use a library. Some people use tablets to read books too. Tablets can do many things, but e-readers are made just for reading.
