Smartwatch

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A smartwatch is a portable computer that you wear on your wrist.

Most modern models use a touchscreen to work. They often rely on mobile apps from a connected smartphone. This connection helps them provide many important functions. Some high-end models even have cellular capabilities. This lets you make and receive phone calls directly.

How a smartwatch works involves many tiny parts working together. Most watches use a rechargeable lithium-ion battery for power. They feature a display, like an LCD or an OLED screen.

Many watches include sensors to feel the world around them. An accelerometer tracks movement, while a barometer measures air pressure. Some have heart rate monitors or ECG sensors to check your body. They might even use GPS to find your exact location.

Later, Seiko made the Data 2000 in 1984. This watch used an external keyboard to enter data. It could store 2,000 characters using electromagnetic coupling.

Many different companies helped build the technology we use today. In 1994, the Timex Datalink could transfer data wirelessly from a computer. It used light patterns to send information to an optical sensor.
