Most of these devices use a battery for power. They usually have a flat screen and a way to give commands. This might be a keypad or a touchscreen. Many modern devices use wireless networking to work. This lets them connect to the Internet or other tools nearby. They use things like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or cellular networks to do this.

These devices work in a few different ways. Some are carried loosely in a pocket or a bag. This is called being accompanied. Other devices are built directly into a larger machine. For example, an autonomous vehicle might have devices inside it. This is called being embedded. Some devices are even very tiny. Scientists call these "smart dust" because they are so small. They can be as tiny as a micrometer.

Technology has changed a lot over the years. In the past, tools usually did only one job. A digital camera only took photos. A pocket calculator only did math. In the 1990s, people used Personal Digital Assistants, or PDAs. These helped people write notes and set reminders. Later, mobile phones changed from just making calls to sending texts. Now, we have smartphones that combine many tools into one.

There are many different types of these tools today. You might use a tablet computer for work or school. Some people use handheld gaming consoles to play games.

There are even smart glasses that you wear on your face. Some devices are very small, like a smart ring. Other tools, like a smart card, do not even have a screen. They use a CPU and memory to hold information. You must put them in a reader to see the data.

Mobile devices help us do many things every day. They can use sensors to tell if they are moving. This is called detecting orientation and motion. Some devices use your face or fingerprint to unlock. This is known as biometric user authentication. In the medical field, doctors use them to find information about drugs. They can even use them to do medical math. These tools make many hard jobs much easier to finish.
