A mobile device is a computer small enough to be held and operated in the hand.

These handheld devices are typically battery-powered to allow for movement. They usually feature a flat-panel display for viewing information. They also include one or more built-in input devices. These inputs often consist of a touchscreen or a keypad. Modern devices emphasize wireless networking to connect to the Internet. They also connect to nearby devices like headsets via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or cellular networks.

Mobility can be understood through how a device relates to a mobile host. A mobile host is a person or a moving object. There are three ways a device can be bound to a host. The first way is called being accompanied. This means the object is loosely bound, like a smartphone in a pocket. The second way is being surface-mounted. The third way is being embedded into the fabric of a host. An example of an embedded device is a controller inside an autonomous vehicle. In these cases, the device itself is part of the mobile machine.

Device sizes vary greatly according to how they are used. Mark Weiser, the father of ubiquitous computing, categorized these sizes. He identified tab-sized, pad-sized, and board-sized devices. Tabs are centimeter-sized and can be wearable or accompanied. Handheld devices, such as tablets or phablets, are decimeter-sized. Some technology moves beyond flat surfaces into non-planar forms. Skin devices use conductive polymers to create flexible displays in clothes or curtains. Even smaller are dust-sized devices known as micro-electromechanical systems, or MEMS. These miniaturized devices range from nanometers to millimeters in size.

The history of mobile devices is a story of technological convergence. In the past, devices were designed for a single specific purpose. A digital camera only took photos, while a calculator only did math. During the 1990s, Personal Digital Assistants, or PDAs, became popular. They helped users manage schedules and notes alongside larger laptops. During this same era, mobile phones evolved beyond simple voice calls. They began to support text messaging and Internet connectivity. Eventually, feature phones gave way to the modern smartphone.

Since the late 2000s, smartphones have become the most common mobile device due to this convergence.

Today, mobile devices include a massive variety of specialized forms. You might use a tablet computer or a netbook for work. Some people use handheld gaming computers or consoles for entertainment.

Wearable technology has also expanded the field significantly. This includes smartwatches, smartglasses, and even smart rings. Some devices do not have a display at all. A smart card, such as a bank card, is a common example. These cards contain a CPU and memory to store data. To see the information, the card must be inserted into a reader.

Modern mobile technology relies on advanced internal sensors. By the early 2010s, devices began integrating accelerometers and gyroscopes. These sensors allow the device to detect orientation and motion. Many devices also use biometric user authentication. This includes using a fingerprint or face recognition to secure the device. In professional fields, these tools are becoming essential. For example, medical professionals use them to access clinical information. They can use mobile devices to check drugs or perform medical calculations.

In the military, they provide training and educational resources to soldiers anywhere.

Mobile devices also impact social and legal systems. The rise of mobile gaming led to the growth of mobile gambling. This caused the gambling industry to offer casino games on handheld devices. Because of this, new anti-hazard legislation was created. These laws address the potential for illegal gambling on mobile platforms. There are also concerns regarding the use of devices for sharing explicit material. In the business world, enterprise digital assistants help manage assets and scan barcodes. These devices are often made to be more rugged for field work. They allow workers to digitize notes and manage parts in real time.
