It is a device that lets you find, buy, and download books. You can also use it for newspapers, magazines, and audiobooks. These devices connect to the Kindle Store using wireless networking. This connection makes it easy to get new things to read. By March 2018, the Kindle Store had over six million e-books in the United States. This large collection means there is always something new to discover.

Most Kindle devices use a screen called E Ink. This is a type of electronic paper display. It is designed to look like real paper on a page. This helps make reading much easier on your eyes. Some newer models, like the Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition, even have color E Ink. This allows you to see colors while still using the paper-like screen. The screen technology is a key part of why people like these devices.

The story of the Kindle began with a big goal. In 2004, Jeff Bezos asked his team to build the best electronic reader. The company used the secret code name Fiona during the early stages. Branding experts Michael Cronan and Karin Hibma later chose the name Kindle. They picked this name because it means to light a fire. They thought this was a great way to describe the excitement of reading.

Later, the Kindle DX came out in 2009 with a larger 9.7-inch screen. Other models include the Kindle Paperwhite, which has a lighted touchscreen. There is also the Kindle Scribe, which was released in 2022. It has a large 10.2-inch screen and works with a Wacom stylus. This pen lets you write directly on the digital page.
