The clavichord is a small, rectangular keyboard instrument.

It was a favorite tool for musicians for hundreds of years. People used it during the Late Middle Ages and the Renaissance. It remained popular through the Baroque and Classical eras too. Because it is quite quiet, it was not for big shows. Instead, people used it for practicing or writing new music. It was perfect for playing solo music in a small room.

Inside the instrument, metal strings run from one end to the other.

When you press a key, a small metal blade called a tangent strikes a string. These tangents are made of brass and shaped like flat screwdriver heads. Unlike a piano, the tangent stays touching the string while you hold the key. This creates a very close connection between the player and the sound. You can play loudly or softly by how hard you hit the key. You can even make a shaking sound called Bebung.

This instrument has a very long history. It was invented in the early fourteenth century. A German poem from 1404 mentions it as a great tool for melodies. In 1502, a queen named Elizabeth of York had a pair of them. The instrument was most popular in German lands and Scandinavia. It also flourished in the Iberian Peninsula during certain times. By the year 1850, it had mostly fallen out of use.

Clavichords come in different styles, like fretted or unfretted versions.

In a fretted clavichord, one string can play several different notes. This makes it easier to tune because there are fewer strings. An unfretted clavichord has one string for every single note. These are easier to tune and allow for more musical flexibility. Some large versions even had pedals for the feet. Organ players used these pedal clavichords to practice at home.

Many famous people have used the clavichord throughout history. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart carried one with him while he traveled. He even bought one from a maker named Johann Andreas Stein. In modern times, the sound lives on in new ways. A version called the Clavinet plugs into an amplifier. Famous singers like Stevie Wonder use it for funky music. Even The Beatles used the clavichord in one of their songs.
