A clavichord is a small keyboard instrument.

It has many metal strings inside. When you press a key, a small metal blade hits a string. These blades are called tangents.

Unlike a piano, the tangent stays against the string. This lets the player control the sound very closely. You can play softly or loudly. You can even make a shaking sound called Bebung.

Because it is quiet, people used it in small rooms. It was a great tool for practice and writing music. Famous makers like Johann Andreas Stein built them. Even Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart used a clavichord to practice while traveling.

Some clavichords were fretted. This means one string can play many different notes. Other clavichords were unfretted. These had one string for each note. This made them easier to tune. Some large versions even had pedals for the feet. This helped organ players practice at home. Today, people still play this lovely instrument.
