A harpsichord is a keyboard instrument. It makes sound by plucking strings.

When you press a key, it lifts a small strip of wood. We call this strip a jack.

Each jack holds a tiny wedge called a plectrum. In the past, these were made from bird quill. Today, many are made of plastic. The plectrum plucks a string to make a note.

The strings sit on a thin wooden board. This is the soundboard. It makes the vibrations loud enough to hear.

Some harpsichords have more than one set of strings. These sets are called choirs. A player can use levers to choose which choir sounds. This can change the tone or the volume. Some large models even have two rows of keys.

This makes the instrument more flexible for music.

The harpsichord was very popular in the Baroque era. It was used for solo music and to help other instruments. Later, the piano became more common. The piano uses hammers instead of plucking strings. This lets players change how loud a note is. The harpsichord mostly disappeared for a while. Now, people play it again to enjoy older music.
