Most modern pianos have 88 black and white keys. When you press a key, a wooden hammer hits a string.

These hammers are covered in soft felt. The vibrating strings send sound through a bridge to a soundboard. This makes the sound loud enough to hear.

You can play the piano softly or loudly. The name "piano" comes from an Italian term meaning "soft and loud." If you press the keys with more force, the sound is louder. You can also use pedals at the bottom. The sustain pedal lifts dampers off the strings. This lets the notes ring out for a long time.

There are two main types of piano. The grand piano is large and has a great sound. The upright piano is smaller and costs less.

Bartolomeo Cristofori invented the first piano around the year 1700. He worked in Italy. Before the piano, people used the harpsichord. The harpsichord could not change volume by touch. The piano changed music forever because it is so expressive.
