Because of his work, he is often called Charak acharya. His ideas helped people understand how to stay healthy for a long time.

Charaka believed the body works best when it stays in balance. He taught that the body has three main parts called doshas. These are vata, which is for movement. Pitta is for transformation, or change. Kapha is for lubrication and stability.

These three parts are made when food acts upon the body's tissues. If these doshas get out of balance, a person might become sick. Charaka used many ways to bring the balance back. He suggested changing what people eat or using herbal remedies. He also used massage and other therapies to help.

We do not know the exact dates when Charaka lived. Many people believe he lived during the 4th century BCE. Some scholars say he lived between 100 BCE and 200 CE.

He may have been the doctor for King Kanishka. This king ruled during the Kushan Empire. Some people also think Charaka was from Kashmir. A scholar named Professor Sylvain Lévi believed this after finding old manuscripts. Charaka is also linked to the University of Taxila.

The Charaka Samhita is a very large and detailed book. It was originally written by Agnivesha in the 8th century BCE. Charaka later revised this work and gave it its new name.

Later, a scholar named Acharya Dridhabala added seventeen more chapters to it. The book covers many things like anatomy and surgery. It even lists 360 bones in the human body, including teeth. Charaka also wrote about many different kinds of parasitic worms.

Charaka used many different things to make his medicines. He used plants, minerals, and even things from animals.
