Chanda Kochhar is a well-known Indian banker. She served as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of ICICI Bank from 2009 to 2018.

In these roles, she was responsible for the bank's many operations in India and around the world. She also led the boards of several smaller companies owned by the bank. Kochhar was a very influential figure in the global financial world. She was a member of groups like the US-India CEO Forum. She even served as the president of the International Monetary Conference.

Kochhar's career followed a steady path of growth. She started at ICICI in 1984 as a management trainee.

During her early years, she checked and monitored different industrial projects. She worked with industries like paper, cement, and textiles. In 1993, she joined the core team that helped set up ICICI Bank. She earned many promotions over the years. She became an executive director in 2001 and a deputy managing director in 2006. By 2009, she had reached the very top position at the bank.

Her education and early life helped prepare her for leadership. She was born in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, into a Hindu Sindhi family.

She went to school in Jaipur at St. Angela Sophia School. Later, she moved to Mumbai to attend Jai Hind College. She earned a bachelor of commerce degree from the University of Mumbai. She also studied cost accountancy and earned a master of management studies degree. Kochhar was a very bright student. She won the Wockhardt Gold Medal and the J. N. Bose Gold Medal for her studies.

Kochhar received many honors for her work in finance. In 2011, she was given the Padma Bhushan. This is one of the highest civilian honors in India.

She was often named one of the most powerful women in business. Fortune magazine included her on their list starting in 2005. In 2015, Time magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world. She also received an honorary doctorate from Carleton University in Canada in 2014. These awards recognized her leadership during difficult economic times.

However, her career faced serious legal challenges later on. In 2018, an anonymous whistleblower made a complaint.

The bank investigated and found she had a conflict of interest. This means she may have let personal ties influence her work decisions. The bank found she violated their code of conduct regarding loans. She was eventually fired from her position. The Supreme Court of India later upheld this decision. She now faces legal cases involving money laundering and loan fraud. The Central Bureau of Investigation arrested her in December 2022. These cases are linked to large loans given to the Videocon Group.
