To be a great bowler, Goswami had to work very hard. She was born in Chakdaha in the Nadia district of West Bengal. Her town did not have places to play cricket back then. Because of this, she traveled to Kolkata to find training. She first became interested in cricket by watching the 1992 Cricket World Cup on TV. Later, watching Belinda Clark in the 1997 Women's Cricket World Cup inspired her even more. She started playing the sport when she was 15 years old.

Goswami's career began in 2002 with her international debut against England. She played in both one-day matches and Test matches. In the 2006–07 season, she helped India win its first Test series in England. During a match at Taunton, she took her career best figures of 10/78. This means she took five wickets in the first part of the game and five in the second. She also served as the captain of the Indian team from 2008 to 2011.

Her many successes earned her many important awards and records. In 2007, she won the ICC Women's Cricketer of the Year award. She also received the Arjuna Award in 2010 and the Padma Shri in 2012. In 2016 and 2019, she was the number one ranked bowler in the world. By 2022, she became the first woman to take 250 wickets in one-day cricket. She even became the highest wicket taker in Women's Cricket World Cup history.

Many people still celebrate her amazing journey today. An Indian postage stamp was even made to honor her in 2018. A movie called "Chakda Xpress" is being made about her life. This film will show her path from the nets in Kolkata to the famous Lord's ground in London. Even after she retired from international cricket in 2022, she stayed involved in the sport. She joined the Mumbai Indians as a bowling coach and mentor in 2023.
