Elizabeth Holmes

Elizabeth Anne Holmes was a leader in the field of biotechnology. Biotechnology is a science that uses living things to create new tools. She founded a company called Theranos in 2003. Her goal was to change how people get medical tests. She wanted to make blood testing much easier for everyone.

Her big idea was to use only tiny amounts of blood. Instead of using large needles, she wanted to use a fingerprick. This would allow people to get data from just a few droplets. Many experts at Stanford said her idea would not work. However, Holmes did not give up on her plan. She eventually found support from Channing Robertson at Stanford. This helped her start the company in Palo Alto, California.

Holmes grew very famous and wealthy in a short time. In 2015, Forbes named her a self-made female billionaire. At that time, her company was valued at $9 billion. She even appeared on the covers of many magazines. She was able to recruit very important people to her board. These leaders included George Shultz and James Mattis. These men were or became important officials in the U.S. government.

Things changed when a reporter named John Carreyrou began to investigate. He found out that the Edison device gave wrong results. The company was also using machines made by other companies. In 2018, the government charged Holmes with fraud. Fraud is when someone uses lies to get money. She and her partner, Sunny Balwani, were accused of lying to investors. They had raised $700 million using false claims.

In January 2022, a trial ended with a big decision. A jury found Holmes guilty of defrauding investors. She was sentenced to go to a federal prison. She must also pay $452 million in restitution. Restitution is money paid back to the people who were hurt. This story shows how important it is to tell the truth in science. It also shows why accuracy matters in medicine.
