technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Elizabeth Holmes was a business leader in the field of biotechnology. Biotechnology is a science that uses living things to make new tools. In 2003, she started a company called Theranos. She wanted to make blood tests easier. She said her tools only needed a tiny drop of blood from a finger. This idea made her very famous. In 2015, Forbes called her the youngest self-made female billionaire in the United States. Her company was worth $9 billion at that time.

But the company had big problems. A reporter found out that the blood tests were not accurate. The tools did not work like Holmes said they did. She also made false claims to get money from investors. This is called fraud. In 2022, a court found her guilty of fraud. She was sent to federal prison. She and her partner, Sunny Balwani, must pay $452 million back to the victims. This money is called restitution. It is a way to pay people back for what they lost.
