He spent his life fighting for better treatment for people in the fields. He believed that workers deserved fair pay and safe jobs. This work was important because many people lived in poverty. He wanted to give them a voice in society. His leadership helped change how farm work is organized today.

Chavez used a special way to fight for change. He used nonviolent resistance to pressure big farm owners. This means he did not use force or violence. Instead, he used picketing and boycotts to make a point.

He was inspired by the ideas of Mahatma Gandhi. He also used his Catholic faith to guide his actions. He held fasts and public marches to show his strength.

His journey began in Yuma, Arizona, in 1927.

His family moved to California during the Great Depression. They worked very hard as agricultural laborers in the fields. As a young man, Cesar served in the US Navy. After his service, he returned to California to work in the fields again. These early years taught him about the hard lives of many families.

In 1962, Chavez helped start the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA).
