Reuther learned many lessons from his family in West Virginia. His father, Valentine, was a union organizer. He taught his five children to think about big ideas. They talked about things like child labor and civil rights. Walter also saw how hard life was for many families. His mother, Anna, made clothes from old flour sacks to save money. When his father was hurt, Walter worked at age nine. He even worked in a factory during high school. He saw how dangerous jobs could be for workers.
