He spent 57 years working for labor unions. A labor union is a group that helps workers. These groups work to make sure jobs are fair. Meany helped create one of the largest groups in the country. He was the first president of the AFL–CIO. This group was a huge federation of many different unions. He led this massive group for 24 years. His work changed how workers lived and worked in the United States.

Meany grew up in a large family in New York City.

He was born on August 16, 1894. His father was a plumber and a union leader. Meany became a plumber too when he was a teenager. He left high school at age 16 to work. After his father died, George helped support his mother and siblings. He even played semiprofessional baseball to earn extra money. He worked hard to build a life for his family. He later married a garment worker named Eugenia McMahon.

His career in union leadership grew very quickly. In 1920, he joined the board of a local plumber's union. By 1923, he was a secretary for construction workers in New York City. In 1934, he became the president of the New York State Federation of Labor. He moved to Washington, D.C., in 1939 to work for the AFL. During World War II, he represented the AFL on a national board. He was known for being very honest and working hard. He also liked to speak to the news and the public.

One of his biggest jobs was joining two large groups together. In 1952, he became the president of the AFL. He wanted to merge the AFL with the CIO. This was a very hard job that took three years. Some leaders did not want the groups to join. Meany decided to accept all unions exactly as they were. This made the process much faster. In December 1955, the merger was finally finished. The new AFL–CIO had 15 million members.

Meany also fought to keep unions honest and fair. He worked hard to stop corruption in the labor movement. Corruption is when people in charge are dishonest with money. He even removed unions from his group if they were not following the rules. He wanted every worker to be treated with respect. Meany also had strong views on politics and wars. He supported President Lyndon B. Johnson during the Vietnam War. He remained a famous leader until he passed away in 1980.
