The Delano grape strike was a major movement for farm workers. It began in Delano, California, to fight for fair treatment. Workers faced low pay and dangerous working conditions. They also lacked health insurance and pensions.

Many workers had to deal with dangerous pesticides. These chemicals could even cause temporary blindness. The strike was a way for workers to demand respect. It changed how people think about farm labor in America.

The strike used many different methods to succeed. Workers used nonviolent resistance to make their points. They held marches and organized their local communities. One powerful tool was the consumer boycott. This is when people refuse to buy a certain product.

By not buying grapes, people pressured large companies. They also used theater to share their stories. A group called El Teatro Campesino performed skits on trucks. These plays used humor to explain the workers' cause.

The movement started with Filipino farm workers. They belonged to the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee, or AWOC. Larry Itliong led these workers during the strike. On September 8, 1965, they walked off the vineyards.

A week later, the Mexican National Farmworkers Association joined them. This group was the NFWA and was led by Cesar Chavez. In August 1966, the two groups merged together. They formed a new union called the United Farm Workers.

Many important people helped lead this long struggle. Dolores Huerta was a co-founder of the new union. She helped organize grape boycotts in New York and New Jersey.

In 1966, Cesar Chavez led a 300-mile march to Sacramento. This march was meant to get the government's attention. The strike lasted for five years in total. It finally ended in July 1970 with a victory.

This win helped more than 10,000 farm workers.

This victory was a huge step for labor rights. The workers reached a new agreement with grape growers. This agreement raised wages for the people in the fields. It also helped stop child labor in the industry.
