She was born on April 10, 1930, in Dawson, New Mexico. Her father, Juan Fernández, was a coal miner. He was a strong leader for his union. As a child, Dolores moved to many places. After high school, Dolores became a teacher in 1954. She taught in rural parts of California. She saw that many of her students were hungry. They also did not have enough warm clothes. This made her want to change things. She left teaching to work for a group called the CSO. There, she learned how to be a leader. She worked on voter registration and helped people learn about citizenship.

Dolores helped start a new group for farm workers. She worked with Cesar Chavez and Gilbert Padilla. They started the National Farm Workers Association in 1962. This group later joined with others to become the United Farm Workers. In 1965, a big strike began in Delano, California. Larry Itliong helped start this strike in the grape fields. Dolores helped lead the movement. She organized boycotts to help the workers. A boycott is when people stop buying something to show they disagree.

Dolores was a very important negotiator for the union. She spoke to big grape companies like Gallo and Franzia. In 1966, she helped win a fair contract for the workers. These deals helped raise wages for the people in the fields. They also added safety rules to protect workers from pesticides. She also helped pass a law in California in 1975. This law helped farm workers have a voice in their work.

Today, Dolores is still very active in helping people. She started the Dolores Huerta Foundation in 2002. This group is based in Bakersfield, California. She also fights for women's rights and for immigrant rights. She has won many honors for her hard work. In 2012, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. California even named her birthday "Dolores Huerta Day" in 2018.
