He lived during a time when the British ruled his country. Singh wanted India to be independent and free. He was a member of a group called the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association. This group, or HSRA, wanted to change how the country worked. Singh was known for being very charismatic and smart. He used his ideas to inspire many young people in the 1930s.

In 1928, Singh and his group wanted to take action. They were angry because a leader named Lala Lajpat Rai had died. Rai had been hurt by police during a large protest. Singh and his friend Shivaram Rajguru wanted to punish the person they blamed. They intended to find a police leader named James Scott. However, they made a mistake in Lahore. They shot a different officer named John P. Saunders instead.

This event changed Singh's life forever.

Singh later planned a way to make his voice heard. In April 1929, he went to the Central Legislative Assembly in Delhi. He went with a friend named Batukeshwar Dutt. They threw two small bombs into the hall. The bombs were not meant to kill anyone. They were low-intensity bombs meant to make a loud noise.

They threw leaflets from the gallery while people were inside. Then, they stayed to be arrested by the authorities. They wanted the trial to be a stage for their ideas.

While in jail, Singh fought for the rights of prisoners. He and another man named Jatin Das went on a hunger strike. They wanted better conditions for Indian people in prison. This strike became very famous in newspapers.
