Mangal Pandey was an Indian soldier who changed history. He was a sepoy, which is a private soldier, in the Bengal Army. He served in the 34th Regiment of the Bengal Native Infantry. His actions in 1857 helped start a very large uprising. This uprising is known as the Indian Rebellion of 1857. Many people see him as a key figure in this era.

Many things caused tension in the army before the rebellion. The British introduced the Enfield P-53 rifle to the soldiers. This rifle used new paper cartridges that soldiers had to bite. Many soldiers feared the cartridges used animal grease. They thought the grease came from cows or pigs. This was a problem for Hindu and Muslim soldiers. It felt like their religions were being disrespected.

On March 29, 1857, Mangal Pandey took a stand at Barrackpore. He was a soldier from a Brahmin family in Nagwa. He went to the regiment's guard room with a loaded musket. He called for the men to rebel against the British. He fought against Lieutenant Baugh and Sergeant-Major Hewson. Another soldier named Shaikh Paltu tried to stop him. The scene was very chaotic and loud.

After the fight, Pandey was taken to a hospital under guard. He was put on trial less than one week later. A court decided he must be executed by hanging. This happened on April 8, 1857, in front of many units. Another officer, Jemadar Ishwari Prasad, was also executed later. The British also disbanded the 34th Regiment as punishment. They believed the whole regiment was not reliable.

The events in Barrackpore led to huge changes in India. The rebellion caused the East India Company to end its rule. The British government took direct control through a new law. This new rule is called the British Raj. Today, India remembers Mangal Pandey for his role. The Republic of India even issued a postage stamp for him in 1984.
