British Raj

history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The British Raj was a time when the British Crown ruled much of the Indian subcontinent. This period lasted from 1858 until 1947. During this time, the land was very large and diverse. It included mountains, deserts, and long coastlines. It also covered parts of what we now call India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Myanmar.

Some areas were ruled directly by Britain. Other parts were ruled by local leaders called princely states. This was a huge part of the world. At one time, it was the second-most populated place on Earth.

This system of rule changed how things worked in the region. The British built many new things like roads, bridges, and canals. They also built a very large railway network. By 1920, it was the fourth largest in the world.

These trains helped move goods like cotton to big ports. They also helped move food during hard times. However, building these things cost a lot of money. Most of this cost was paid by Indian farmers and workers.

Control of the land changed because of a big rebellion in 1857. Before that, a group called the East India Company ran things. After the rebellion, the British government took direct control in 1858. Queen Victoria became the Empress of India in 1876.

The British also changed how the army worked. They made new groups of soldiers to keep things stable. They also decided to stop changing local traditions and religions. They wanted to avoid more fighting with the people living there.

Life was not always easy for everyone during the Raj. Large famines happened, which meant many people did not have enough food.

These were very sad times for many families. To help, the British created Famine Codes. These were early plans to try to prevent hunger. These plans were so important that they were used by the United Nations later.

The region also saw a new middle class grow by 1880. These people were well-educated and worked in many different jobs.

As time went on, many people wanted more say in their own country. This period of history ended in 1947. The land was split into two new nations. One became the Dominion of India. The other became the Dominion of Pakistan.
