The government is split into different levels. This helps manage such a large land. It is called a quasi-federal system. This system mixes different ways of governing.

India is divided into many smaller parts. There are 28 states and 8 union territories. This makes 36 subnational entities in total. States are self-governing areas with their own leaders. Union territories are different. The central union government rules them directly. A lieutenant governor or administrator helps run them. These leaders are chosen by the president.
