Ceratophryidae

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Common horned frogs live in South America. They belong to a group called Ceratophryidae. Not all these frogs have horns near their eyes. Most have very large heads and big mouths. They are ambush predators. This means they hide and wait for food. They can eat large prey. This includes lizards and other frogs. They even eat small mammals.

These frogs can live in dry areas. They are seasonal breeders. This means they breed at certain times of the year. They lay many small eggs in water. The babies are called tadpoles. Some tadpoles eat meat. Others are grazers that eat plants.

Scientists study these frogs in many ways. We have found old fossils of this family. The oldest fossils are from the Miocene epoch. This was a long time ago. Some scientists once thought a giant frog named Beelzebufo was in this family. Now they think it is just a close relative. There are 12 living species in this group today. They belong to three different genera.
