Hylidae

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Hylidae is a big family of frogs. Many people call them tree frogs. Some of these frogs live in trees. Others live on land or in water.

Most tree frogs have special parts to help them climb. They have sticky pads on their fingers and toes. Their eyes face forward. This gives them binocular vision, which helps them see well.

These frogs lay eggs in many different ways. Some use small puddles in tree holes. Others use plants that hold water. Some frogs lay eggs on leaves over water. When the tadpoles hatch, they drop into the pond. Some eggs are in fast streams. Those tadpoles have suckers to hold onto rocks. In South America, some mothers carry eggs on their backs.

Most hylids eat insects. Some larger frogs eat small vertebrates, which are animals with backbones. You can find these frogs in many places. The European tree frog lives in Europe and Asia. The spring peeper is common in the eastern United States. You can hear them on warm evenings.
