Triadobatrachus was a very old animal. It lived 250 million years ago. This was during the Early Triassic period. It lived in what is now Madagascar.

This creature is a transitional fossil. That means it is a link between old animals and new ones. It is the oldest member of the frog family. It looked a bit like a modern frog. Its skull had thin bones with large holes.

But it was also different from frogs today. It had at least 26 vertebrae. Vertebrae are the bones in the back. Modern frogs have only four to nine. It also had a short tail. Ten of its back bones made this tail.

It probably swam by kicking its back legs. It could not jump like a frog today. Scientists found a nearly complete skeleton in the 1930s. The bones were in their natural spots. This shows it fossilized soon after it died. It likely lived on land and breathed air. We know this because of nearby plant remains. It also lived near the mainland.
