Triadobatrachus is a very special animal from the past. It is the oldest member of the frog family ever found. Scientists call it a transitional fossil. This means it shows how animals change over time. It acts like a link between older creatures and modern frogs. This animal lived a very long time ago. It lived during the Early Triassic period, about 250 million years ago.

This creature worked differently than the frogs we see today. Most frogs have only four to nine vertebrae, which are back bones. Triadobatrachus had at least 26 of these bones. At least 10 of those bones made a short tail. It likely kept this tail even when it was an adult. It probably swam by kicking its hind legs. It could not jump like a modern frog can.

People found this amazing fossil in the 1930s. A man named Adrien Massinot found it near Betsiaka. This village is in northern Madagascar. He found an almost complete skeleton in the Sakamena Group. The bones were in their natural positions. This tells us the animal fossilized soon after it died. Only the front of the skull and limb ends were missing.

A scientist named Jean Piveteau first described it in 1936. He originally called it Protobatrachus massinoti. Later, the name Triadobatrachus massinoti became the main name used. This fossil was found in marine deposits. However, the animal likely lived on land and breathed air. We know this because of land plants found near it. It also lived close to the mainland.

Triadobatrachus helps us see how life evolves. It shares the same age as Czatkobatrachus from Poland. That animal also lived during the Early Triassic. Millions of years later, a new group appeared. The earliest known modern frog is called Prosalirus. It lived during the Early Jurassic period. Studying these old bones helps us map the path of life.
