Tanystropheus was a very unusual reptile from the Triassic Period.

It lived a long time ago in Europe, Asia, and North America. This animal is most famous for its extremely long neck.

The neck was actually longer than its torso and tail combined. It was made of 13 vertebrae, which are the bones in the spine. These bones were strengthened by many ribs. This helped keep the long neck steady. It was a very special kind of archosauromorph reptile.

Scientists believe this animal lived both on land and in the water.

Its neck was lightweight and held steady by tendons. This helped it move on land without the neck being a problem. The legs and the base of the tail were large and muscular. These parts helped it swim in short bursts through shallow water. It was likely an ambush predator.

This means it would wait quietly to grab its food. It used its long neck to reach out and catch slippery prey.

Learning about Tanystropheus took many years of careful work.

In 1886, a scientist named Francesco Bassani found a fossil. He thought it was a flying pterosaur named Tribelesodon. He did not realize the long bones were actually neck vertebrae. Later, in the 1920s, Bernhard Peyer found more fossils at Monte San Giorgio. These new finds showed the animal did not fly at all. It was a reptile with a very long neck instead. This helped scientists finally understand what the animal really was.

Many important fossils come from a place called Monte San Giorgio.

This site is on the border of Italy and Switzerland. Researchers found two different species living there. One was the smaller Tanystropheus longobardicus with three-cusped teeth. The other was the larger Tanystropheus hydroides with big, curved fangs.

Other fossils have been found in China and Nova Scotia, Canada. One bone from Canada was even found in freshwater soil. This shows they lived in many different kinds of water.

Tanystropheus helps us see how life changed in the Triassic Period.

It belongs to a group called Tanystropheidae. This group includes many other long-necked animals from that time. Even though it looks strange, it was well-suited to its home. Its teeth were perfect for holding onto fish. Its body was built to work in both the sea and on the shore. It is one of the best-known animals from this ancient time.
