Peteinosaurus was a very small flying reptile. Its name means "winged lizard" in Greek.

This animal lived a long time ago. It lived during the late Triassic period. This was about 218 to 215 million years ago. It is known as one of the earliest pterosaurs. Pterosaurs were a group of reptiles that could fly. Peteinosaurus was a very important part of their early history.

This creature had a special way of working. Its bones were very light but still strong. This helped it stay in the air. It had three types of cone-shaped teeth. These teeth were called trimorphodontic. This helped the animal eat insects. Its fifth toe was long and had no claw. This toe could move in a different way to help control its wing membrane.

Scientists have studied these fossils for a long time. The German paleontologist Rupert Wild first described this genus in 1978. The specific name zambellii honors Rocco Zambelli. He was the curator of a natural history museum in Bergamo. In 1988, Robert L. Carroll placed it in a group called Dimorphodontidae. Other scientists like Fabio Marco Dalla Vecchia have studied its place in history. They look at how it connects to other early flying reptiles.

Most fossils were found near Cene, Italy.

There are three main fossil examples. The first is a partial skeleton called the holotype. The second is a more complete skeleton called a paratype. This one had a long tail that was 20 cm long. The third is another partial skeleton. All these fossils come from young animals. None of the fossils include a skull.

Peteinosaurus was tiny compared to later flying reptiles. Its wingspan was only about 50 centimeters wide. Later pterosaurs like Pteranodon had wings over twenty feet wide. Its wings were also short for its body. The wing length was only twice the length of its hindlimbs. Other pterosaurs had wings three times as long as their legs. It was a very different flyer than the ones that came much later.
