That was about 201 to 191 million years ago. Its name comes from Greek words meaning "two-form tooth." This name describes its very special mouth. Most reptiles have teeth that look similar. However, Dimorphodon had two distinct types of teeth in its jaws.

This feature made it quite rare among the reptiles of its time.

Its body was built in a very interesting way.

The creature had a large and bulky skull. To keep the head light, the skull had large openings. These openings were separated by thin bony parts. This structure is like the strong arches of a bridge. It provided great strength without adding too much weight. The neck was short but very strong and flexible. The wings were also proportionally short for its body size.

This meant it was not a great glider like some other pterosaurs.

Finding the history of this animal is a long story.

The first fossils were found in England in December 1828. A famous collector named Mary Anning found them at Lyme Regis. At first, scientists thought it was a type of Pterodactylus. Later, a scientist named Richard Owen studied new fossils. He found skulls that looked very different from other species. In 1859, Owen gave it the new name Dimorphodon. He also noted how strong and light its bones were.

There are many specific details about its life and body.

An adult Dimorphodon had a wingspan of 1.45 metres. Its long tail was made of thirty different vertebrae. The front of the upper jaw had four or five fang-like teeth. The lower jaw had five longer teeth and many tiny ones. Scientists believe it likely hunted small vertebrates and insects.

It used a "snap and hold" method to catch its prey. This helped it grab food very quickly with its jaws.

We can imagine how it moved through its world.

Because its wings were short, it likely flew in quick bursts. This is similar to how modern birds like woodpeckers fly. It was also a very talented climber. It had large, curved claws on its hands. Much like a modern squirrel, it probably hopped and climbed through trees.

Even though it could not soar for long, it was very active on the ground and in the trees.
